So much changed during the 19th century as the United States began to
assume its place in the world. We will look at various strands of visual art as
artists respond to changing conditions–Thomas Cole and the Hudson River
landscape artists like Church and Durand, Robert Henri and other Ashcan
artists reflecting urban themes, artists pushing west like Bierstadt, Moran, or
Remington, black artists finding their way such as Edmonia Lewis and Henry
Tanner, expatriates like Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sergeant or James
Whistler and many others.
